Smartphones have become an integral part of our lives, though some might consider them an unwelcome distraction. Might as well make them feel useful with these five practical security apps fit for a fun night out (and the aftermath).

#1 A Security App
Don’t want to waste money on cab fare, or just want to enjoy the fresh night air after a couple of drinks? Then you’ll need a security app for Android and iOS, both to keep you safe and stave off some of the anxiety of walking alone at night.
There’s no one perfect app to put here, but follow the link above and you’ll find five excellent options. Each comes with useful features such as:
- GPS tracking for emergency contacts. Have someone trustworthy (like a roommate or significant other) waiting at home after a girls’ night out? They’ll be able to ensure you return home safely, or call if they notice anything unusual – such as you running to escape a stalker.
- Single-touch or voice-command distress signals. No one wants to fumble around with screen locks in a panic. Alert your emergency contacts with a touch (or even a single scream!)
- Audio or video feeds. Your phone can be a lifesaver when placed in a dangerous situation. Seeing and hearing where you are can make finding you much easier.
- Fake phone calls – perfect for getting out of uncomfortable convos with strangers on public transport and other situations.
These should give you some at least some peace of mind on your way home, or help you find friends who’ve wandered away from your group after one too many at the bar. With these out of the way, let’s get to the fun parts.
#2 Drink-o-Tron
Tired of the usual drinking games making the rounds (no pun intended) at every party? Need something new to liven up the evening? Drink-o-tron has a free app for iOS and Android and is essentially a hilarious variant of the classic card drinking game “Kings”. Draw a virtual card from the 54 available and enjoy all the different drinking minigames. Simple as that.
#3 Shazam
Everyone’s had that moment where they hear a banger tune at a party but no one knows the title or the artist. Pull out your smartphone, tap to Shazam, and the app will identify even some of the most obscure tracks out there.
Missed your chance to Shazam that one tune or the app can’t find what you’re looking for? No worries. You can now hum your earworm into Google search, and the voice assistant will offer some surprisingly accurate results.
#4 Drunk Locker
Have that one friend who texts or drunk dials their ex, boss, or anyone else to give them a piece of their mind? Or maybe posts something embarrassing on Instagram or Twitter, only to wake up to instant regret the next morning?
Apps like Drunk Locker can lock you out from texting, calling, or accessing social media between pre-determined hours. When you’re not out and about, you can simply use them to keep unwanted distractions at bay.
#5 A Ride-hailing App
Uber, Lyft, Bolt, Curb – the list goes on. It’s just faster and easier to let the app handle everything for you. From contacting the driver, and setting up extra stops and destinations, to payments. No need to fumble around with cash or explain which street you’re on, especially when no one in the group is sober enough to have any idea.
More importantly, it’s probably safer than heading through dark, unfamiliar areas on foot. Just remember to check that your ride’s license plate matches the one in the app!
